ust where the hell were you last night? I got a call from one of the detectives out in North Shore saying a patrol had busted you on a construction site in Brookview around midnight!”

Malena glares at me from across the breakfast table as I try, totally unsuccessfully, to interest Tamara in a spoonful of Cream of Rice. I groan. So much for Fuentes keeping it under his hat. Or maybe it was his boot trainee who’d ratted me out.

“Okay, okay, Mal. Chill. I was just checking something out for Cappy, the old Burch?”

“I can’t believe this! How could you go out all alone that time of night in that piece of shit car of yours and risk Tamara like that?”

“Hey, I wasn’t alone! Dicky was with me.” He hasn’t shown up for breakfast yet, so he’s not here to back me up. “Besides, you weren’t here. I thought you were supposed to be guarding me 24/7 or something. Where were you all night?”

Malena turns a little pink. She’s crept in at about six a.m. obviously hoping to stay unnoticed. But she’s freshly showered and reeking of soap. If we were a couple, this would be grounds for divorce. Which reminds me, I need to call Jen back and check in with her about what’s going on with Devon.

“I had… work,” Mal says lamely. “When I took off, you were in your PJs, and I thought you’d be headed for bed soon. Dicky was here, and I left you the shotgun.”

“Right, I know. I took it along with me.” I lie. Actually, I’d completely forgotten to pack it. But I don’t mind stretching the truth to her right this minute, because I know she’s been majorly holding back on me. “Look, Mal, if you’re seeing someone, I think it’s totally great. You can’t spend your life babysitting me. Do I know the guy?”

“I’m not seeing anyone!” she all but snarls. “And anyway, stop changing the subject. The issue here is your security and what we’re gonna do about it on nights I have to work.”

I can’t help myself—I start giggling. “So just bring your work home. He can spend the night here.” She turns bright red again, like a fire hydrant this time. Do I know my girl or what?

And yet she’s sticking to her story, which totally isn’t like her at all. “Come on, Richie, hurry up and get dressed. I need to drop you off at your office and get back to mine.”

“Actually, I need a quick word with Cappy first.”

“Huh? What about?”

“Jeez, Mal, what are you? His Personal Assistant?”

More weirdness. And she acts really strange in the car all the way down, too, lecturing me about all my faults, and how selfish I was and how I was letting everybody who loved me down when I wasn’t careful about my own personal safety and Tamara’s, etc. In all honesty, I’m so exhausted that I just keep dozing off in the passenger seat, so basically all I’m really hearing out of her mouth is “bark, bark, bark, love, bark, bark.
